Do I need to watch previous Star Wars films to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
No, you don’t “need” to watch the previous Star Wars movies before seeing The Force Awakens. This much anticipated installment is sure be phenomenally entertaining in and of itself. The better question is “should” you see the preceding movies? And the answer is an unequivocal yes! Remember, this is a – spend three hundred dollars on a ticket and wait in a theater line for four weeks dressed like a Wookie – pop culture event, and it’s these six earlier movies that make it possible. For the uninitiated they first six movies, in the order of their release, are: A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005).
After seeing the first two trilogies you’ll be able to recognize obscure references and plot twists in the movie you’d otherwise miss. If Hans Solo is reunited with the Millennium Falcon, knowing the backstory adds context. And following the characters, literally backwards and forwards through time, adds to the anticipation. If you want to see The Force Awakens now, wait until after you’ve seen the others. Just the return of Hans Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia (not to mention C-3PO and his buddy R2-D2 I hope) makes this fan want to breakout the VCR.
So don’t miss out, take the time to watch the earlier movies. See them in the order they were released, as opposed to their chronological order. The second trilogy of movies may called be prequels, but the knowing is part of the fun, and context is everything in this saga.
