Comparison Between The Children Brought Up In Filipino And Europe

psychology-essay-sampleBringing up a child is a significant stage in the life of every person: not only it forms the character of an individual; it also sets the values of a person, defines its worldview and attitude to life on a larger scale. Culture is an important factor in rearing a child, as it significantly influences the methods that parents resort to while educating their child. If to compare two cultures, that of the Philippines and the European one, one will see considerable differences in how a child is approached and brought up.
In the Philippines, a child is brought up in close connection to family: it is preconditioned not only by the economical factors (people are forced to live together in view of lower income and difficult financial conditions), but also by the conscious desire to stay together. Thus, from the early years, a Filipino child is exposed to a wide network of family ties: parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts from both mother’s and father’s sides. In Europe, though, this is not as usual – a child spends the majority of time with the immediate family only, communication with more extended relatives being only a rare occasion. This defines the values of a child: a European kid is encouraged to independence while Filipino children are fostered to stay in close touch with their family, become another link in a network of relatives, rely on one another, ask for help if needed.

That is not the case in the Philippines, where a usual thing for a child is to sleep in one bed with parents until 6 years or sometimes even more (Annika, 2014). Again, this shows that independence is promoted for European children and connection with family is of more importance in the Philippines.
Finally, another significant factor which is different in the two cultures is the role of religion in a child’s life. Europe is rather liberal in terms of religion: it offers wide choice of confessions as well as allows atheism; it also does not demand rigid discipline in terms of following any religious rules and regulations of the church. The attitude towards religious education of children is, therefore, quite easy-going: it rather depends on a family where a child is born and does not belong to the sphere of obligatory education. In the Philippines, though, due to the fact that a child is brought up in close connection with all family members, and more than 85% of the population of the country are Roman Catholics (Miller, 2015), religion is an inevitable part of rearing process – from the early years of life Filipino children are immersed in a religious environment. Family cares about religious education of its children not only by being an example of proper Catholic behaviour, but also by giving children to Catholic schools – for more profound religious education.
All in all, there are significant differences in how a child is brought up in the European culture and in the Philippines. The former encourages independence of a kid, while the latter rather focuses on preserving close family ties. The differences in rearing process set various values in a child, making kids look on the world in a particular way and be bright representatives of their native culture.
