Top Study Strategies to Write a Test

The one and only best strategy to complete your writing test with the best grade is to study during your classes. The right organization of study habits will help you write the test without additional effort at the end of semester.

Be prepared for class:
read the basic information about the class before it starts. You will understand more from classes if you already know a bit about what the lectures will be about. If you skip this advice, your understanding of material will dramatically decrease, as it’s more difficult to perceive totally new information.

What steps you can do:

  • Prepare for each class whenever you can;
  • Try to make sense of the material you read about during the classes;
  • Review your notes in the evening and the next day.

Pay attention, don’t get obsessed with note taking. Some students take so many notes that they don’t listen anymore. Notes can be important, but understanding what is being discussed in class is more important. Stay engaged with the material during class: ask yourself questions, write down ideas you need to think about. Learning how to get the most out of classes is very important; for most students, attending classes seems to be a waste of time. Make sure you’re not one of them.

Study a little bit every day:
Many people do virtually nothing for three months and have to cram everything in afterwards. This simply doesn’t work – you’re not even used to studying a little bit! – and this is especially detrimental in combination with the sleep deprivation that usually comes with it. But don’t be too serious with this. Just try to approach the subject from different angles, read different opinions on a subject matter, and answer questions that have arisen after classes; just get more familiar with the subject.

Study every subject only for short periods and take regular breaks: Try not to spend more than two hours on one given subject. Research shows that there is only reduced benefit after two hours of studying and no benefit after studying for four hours on one subject. Also don’t forget to take short breaks every half hour (yes, every half hour) or after learning three key ideas. You may use these short breaks to review the material or to explain it to whoever happens to be in the house (even to the cat.) If you have everything memorized, understood and can explain it, you have learned the material.

Don’t study pages, but study ideas and concepts:
Too many people just study a number of pages and see their studying in this light. It’s much better to say: “I learned about Idea A, Idea B, and Idea C, and they relate to each other in X way”. Get the important ideas from the text and move on.

Never compensate on sleep, food or exercise: The worst you can do is sleep less during exam periods. Try always to sleep enough. While this is in fact well known, too many students try to study more, thinking they can sleep later. Don’t do it. You won’t need it anyway if you consistently study 5-6 hours a day. Also eat healthy food; your brain and body needs it.
