Micheal Collins Contribution To Irish Politics

He spent all his life in fight for peace and freedom of Ireland. Micheal Collins led an extreme political life being a guerrilla, a chairman of Provisional Government, and then a commander-in-Chief of the army. Irish people supported Collins, because of his desire to stop fighting and unite two parts of the country. What was his influence on Irish politics? What was his contribution? Let’s find out.

From his early years he was proud Irish, grown in the spirit of nationalism. During his studying in London, he became a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (James, 1996). Collins became very important in IRB for his intelligence and organizational skills.

Collins took active part in Easter Rising. That was actually his first appearance on the political stage of Ireland. He was a financial advisor of Count Plunkett, the father of Joseph Mary Plunkett, an organizer of Easter Rising. Soon Michael Collins was preparing armed troops for revolt. He was imprisoned at Frongoch internment camp in 1916, but in December 1916 was released. In 1917, after his arrival to Ireland he became a member of Sinn Féin, party of the House of Commons. At the same time, Irish didn’t want be the part of the Commonweals and founded their new parliament, Dáil Éireann. Collins became first Interior Minister, some time latter – the Minister for Finance.

After the truce in 1921 Collins was delegated to London for peace-making talks. As a result of this talks Ireland received partial independence. Signing this document, Collins understood that this decision won’t be supported by most Irish people. After all he was right. Internal conflicts were maintained by external influence, and bloody civil war took place in Ireland.

Michael Collins is considered to be an outstanding person of Ireland, patriot and “big fellow”, as people called him. His impact on Irish politics is difficult to underestimate. One can say for sure, he was at the right place and at the right time.
