What makes some people more attractive than others and why?
The science behind why we find some people more attractive than others is one that has been debated and is defined as the “science of sexiness”.
There are numerous factors that determine one’s level of attraction to another such as physical traits, the level of which is determined by universal perceptions common to all cultures across the board. It is also determined by individual preferences, social, and cultural aspects.
The physical traits are symmetry, hair color, body shape, smell, and eye color. The most crucial symmetry is facial symmetry. The presence of an equally proportion face is a genetic sign of health and genetic integrity, compared to an uneven face that confirms “past injury and illness” (McKeen, 2006). Other factors determining the level of attractiveness of the face include youthfulness, smoothness and clarity of the skin. According to Browne (2006) men find long-haired women more attractive. This has been determined by evolutionary psychology whereby the lack of hair is caused by malnutrition, and lack of essential minerals, hence long hair indicates health. According to David (2005) long hair is a cross-cultural preference. Eye color falls in the category of individual choice and has no basis in evolutionary psychology. Pleasant smells are more preferable, the more pleasant the body odor the more attractive the person is. Body shape is in terms of height and mainly proportionality. Women have been shown to be attracted to men with an athletic physique as compared to unfit looking men. This is also a sign of health and good genetics.
