The adventure novel “Treasure Island” written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson centers upon a thirteen years old boy, Jim Hawkins, who goes on a treasure voyage. While travelling, he encounters a lot of challenges. He finds himself among pirates and learns to survive.

The theme of children’s courage runs through the whole adventure novel. Jim Hawkins, who is protagonist of the story, grows and develops magnificently through his experiences from the beginning to the end of the novel Jim gains great courage and the ability to think independently. [1].

At the beginning of the story, he is a very timid child. He is afraid of the pirat Billy Bones, when he stays in his family’s tavern. He is so frightened, that he has nightmares. Jim is also scared by the blind man Pew. Even when the captain Billy does not pay for food and living, the boy cannot find courage to remind him about his debt. Jim’s character is distinguished such features as the following: abandon, sensitiveness, worldly wisdom.

Sitting in the apple butt, he bugs the pirates’ conversation, who were going to commandeer the ship. Jim’s friends manage to foil pirates’ conspiracy. We see that it is a good example of Jim’s courage. In this situation, he understands,  that his friends’ life depends on his actions. This knowledge makes him brave and resolute.

Jim’s experiences on the ship Hispaniola and on Treasure Island test his resourcefulness and teach him important lessons about loyalty and physical courage. [2]. This voyage develops his maturity. He becomes an independent person, who is not scared of anything. When Jim is taken prisoner by the pirate Long John Silver, he tells him, that he does not fear him.  “I no more fear you than I fear a fly. Kill me, if you please, or spare me” [1]. His words show, that he is no more a shy boy. His voyage has taught him to be courageous and fearless. He has understood that he should be responsible, brave and smart. This voyage is an important lesson for him.

The author centers upon the topic of the children’s courage in order to teach children that they should be brave and responsible, although there occur many challenges in the life. They should not be afraid of anything and Jim Hawkins is an excellent example of a brave child. The author has created such character for children, because he is a very vivid and alive. After reading the story, every child would pattern himself/herself on him.
